Overview
John Kessler Jr. was the fifth child and third son of John (1772-1850) and Nancy Waskey Kesler (1779-1852) and grandson of Andreas Keslar (Kesler or Kessler). He was born in 1804 in Botetourt County, Virginia.
John married Susannah ‘Susan’ McCray (b: 5 Mar 1810-d: 2 Jun 1871 Botetourt County, Va) on 8 Sep 1825. Together, they lived through a pivotal period in American history. They were approaching adolescence at the time of the War of 1812. By the time they reached adulthood, events such as the Monroe Doctrine and the Missouri Compromise were catalysts for a dramatic westward expansion. Fincastle in Botetourt County was a debarkation point for many pioneers setting out for the west.
John and Susan were farmers and raised their family of nine children on their farm. They were in their 50s during the Civil War and both lived into their 60s and were able to know many of their grandchildren.
There is some controversy about when John Jr. died. He died in 1871, aged 67.
Those who suggest that John died in 1889 have the incorrect John Kessler. In the first image below from the 1880 U.S. Census, his named is spelled with the double “ss”, he has a child named “Henry,” and his spouse is “Elizabeth”. John Jr. spelled his last name with a single “s”, did not have a son named Henry, and his wife’s name was Susan.
The John Kessler included in the 1880 U.S. Census image below, who lived until 1889, is not “our John”.
Also note the second 1880 U.S. Census image. Susan Kesler, John’s widow (she identified herself as a widow in that census image) lives with her daughter, Nannie Kesler Custer and Nannie’s family.

1.3.2.5.5 William Kessler (b: Abt. 1843-d: 29 Oct. 1861 Greenbrier, Wv.) aged 18 years

William served in the Confederate Army. He enlisted in Company K, 60th Infantry on 18 Jun 1861 at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia as a private. He died on 29 Oct 1861 at Meadow Bluff, West Virginia.
The Deitz Farm (Meadow Bluff Camp) was used by both the Union and Confederacy between 1861 and 1865. In August of 1861, the Deitz Farm was taken over by Confederate General John B, Floyd following his retreat from the Battle of Carnifex Ferry in Nicholas County, West Virginia. This was the first time the Deitz house was used as a hospital for soldiers.
On September 21, 1861, following the Confederacy’s loss at the Battle of Cheat Mountain also known as Battle of Cheat Summit Fort in Pocahontas and Randolph counties in West Virginia Confederate General Robert E. Lee arrived at the Deitz Farm and took command over Confederate forces in the area.
General Lee and Floyd occupied the Deitz Farm for two days before General Lee pushed his camp onward to Big Sewell Mountain located in Fayette County, West Virgina.
General Lee and his troops stayed on Big Sewell Mountain for a little over three weeks. This is where General Lee saw his horse Traveler for the first time.
Due to bad weather and low on supplies, a battle never erupted. General Robert E. Lee returned to the Deitz Farm on October 21,1861 and remained there until October 29, 1861, the same day that William died.
On two knolls adjacent to the Deitz house, there are several extant trenches. Soldiers would dig trenches to protect themselves from enemy fire. In between the two knolls are fifteen unmarked graves believed to be Confederate soldiers who died on the Deitz Farm.
Approximately two dozen soldiers’ names and regimental inscriptions can be found on several walls inside the Deitz house. The inscriptions are by members of both the Union and Confederate regiments spanning from 1861-1865.

Both Margaret and Eliza died in 1881. In the late 19th century, death clusters within families were tragically common, and while the “Great Pandemic” of influenza didn’t hit until 1889-1890, the year 1881 was a significant year for several localized but deadly outbreaks in the Virginia/Mid-Atlantic region.
In terms of 1881, the three most likely culprits are:
1. Diphtheria (The “Child-Killer”)
This is the single most common cause of family “extinction” clusters in the 1880s. Diphtheria was highly contagious and would often sweep through a home, killing three or four children within a week. This was more likely the cause of death for children or teenagers. Historical records show a major spike in Diphtheria cases throughout Virginia and Pennsylvania in 1881, often referred to in local newspapers as “the throat distemper.”
2. Typhoid Fever
Unlike Diphtheria, Typhoid frequently killed adults as well as children. It was a bacterial infection spread through contaminated water or milk. The year 1881 saw particularly hot, dry summers in the Shenandoah and Great Valley regions, which often caused water levels in wells to drop and become concentrated with bacteria, leading to late-summer and autumn Typhoid clusters.
3. Scarlet Fever
This was another common respiratory/eruptive disease that appeared in waves. While it was more common among children, it had the potential to devastate entire households.
