Weaving: A traditional, skilled handloom profession

Lucinda, the eighth child of Andrew Kessler, married Joshua Lippey Corrick on 5 Dec 1843 and they had twelve children, most of whom spent their lives in Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland. Joshua worked as a weaver.

Joshua’s father, Andrew Corrick, was born in Germany in 1791 and immigrated to the United States, settling in the Middletown Valley, by 1818.  He married Catharina Kopp.  He was a weaver and farmer, and had two children, Joshua, who also became a weaver, and Caroline, who married weaver and machinist, Frederick K. Uber. Andrew Corrick died in 1863 and is buried at the Middletown Reformed Cemetery, Middletown. He was active during the 1830s-1840s.

The 1850 Maryland Census recorded Andrew Corrick as a 59-year-old farmer with land valued at $4000. The 1860 Federal Census listed Corrick’s occupation as farmer and valued his land holdings at $2000 and his personal property at $900, suggesting his son had taken over the family weaving business and perhaps part of the farm. His son, Joshua Corrick (b. 1820) was also a weaver in Middletown, weaving in a similar style, who signed his work in the cornerblocks.

Life as a handloom weaver in 19th-century America was a demanding, skilled, and increasingly challenging occupation that shifted from a respected household, cottage-based industry to a struggling trade in the face of rapid industrialization. Weavers often worked long hours in their own homes, relying on family members to help prepare materials, but were eventually forced to compete with, or work for, mechanized factories.

Life and Work Conditions
  • The Household Economy: Weaving was frequently a domestic, outwork system where families produced cloth on handlooms at home and were paid by the piece.
  • Family Involvement: While men typically performed the heavy work of operating the loom, women often spun the thread, prepared the warp, and finished the fabric.
  • Long Hours: Weavers worked six days a week, often 12 to 14 hours a day in rooms lit by natural light, requiring high concentration.
  • The Process: The weaving process was laborious, requiring the warp to be treated with paste, and hand-throwing the shuttle to produce textiles such as wool, linen, or “jean” (a cotton-wool mix).

19th Century Shifts & Challenges
  • Impact of Technology: The introduction of the power loom and the rise of factory systems significantly lowered the demand for hand-woven goods.
  • Economic Decline: As industrial factories grew, many handloom weavers saw their wages plummet, sometimes leading to poverty.
  • Transition to Small Workshops: Some independent weavers shifted from general textile production to specialized, high-skill work, such as weaving patterned coverlets (e.g., Jacquard coverlets).
  • Rural vs. Industrial: In rural areas, some families continued to weave for self-sufficiency or for local barter, but this became less common by mid-century.

Significance of the Weaver’s Role
  • Independence: For many, particularly women in factories, textile work meant a rare form of financial independence.
  • Artisan Pride: Many weavers viewed themselves as skilled artisans (or “artisan elites”) rather than mere factory workers.

Daily Life
  • Working Environment: Homes were often adapted to include space for the loom, sometimes in well-lit attics.
  • Physicality: The work required intense physical strength for batting (beating) the cloth.
  • Self-Sufficiency: In the early 19th century, families were often responsible for producing their own fabric for clothing and bedding.

1.3.1.9.2 Francis ‘Fannie’ J. Corrick Crouse (b: 12 Jun 1846 Middletown, Md-d: 1 Mar 1912) was born in 1846. She married widower George V. Crouse (Abt. 1833-Aft. 1910) in 1896 at age 50. While she was located in the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Census, she could not be located in the 1870 and 1880 census, suggesting that she might have been married at a typical age of 20 and been widowed or divorced before she married Crouse. No records have been located regarding her status between 1860 and 1896, so it is uncertain if she did actually marry and have children. Considerable time was spent searching the Middletown and Jefferson 1870 U.S. Census for people named Fannie or Frances who were 23 years old to try to see if she had married and remained in the area, with no success.

1.3.1.9.3 Charles Joshua Corrick (b: 17 Mar 1849 Middletown, Md-d: 7 Jun 1924 Fall River County, SD) married Virginia S. ‘Jennie’ Griffith Corrick m: 25 Jun 1879 (b: 2 Oct 1861 Memphis, TN-d: 14 Jun 1938 Cook Cty, IL). Considerable time and, at times, uncertainty, were involved in verifying that Jennie was actually a Griffith and born in Memphis, but the facts support that she was.  Her father’s first name was Lafayette and her mother’s name was Victorine, both of which became middle names of the Corrick children. She also had a brother named Sheperd (Seth) and that was Melvin’s middle name as well. Charles served in the Civil War in 1864 with the Maryland 11th Infantry Regiment.

1.3.1.9.4 Mary Caroline Corrick Fawcett (b: 20 Nov 1850 Middletown, Md-d: 18 Jun 1936 Pomona, LA, CA) married Francis Marion Fawcett (b: 18 Dec 1844 Baltimore-d: 28 Nov 1892 Kensington, Montgomery Cty, Md). Francis was a private in the Maryland Fourth Infantry during the Civil War. Mary and Francis operated a retail store in Kensington, Montgomery County, Maryland for many years.

1.3.1.9.4.1 Norma Lee Fawcett (b: 22 Jul 1872-d: 24 May 1885 Maryland) who died at age 12. The family was living in Rockville, Maryland at the time and that is where Norma was buried. She died only two months after her younger sister Miriam, which suggests that there was a contagious flu that led to their deaths.
