Lifelong Maryland Residents
Amelia, daughter of Andrew and May, married George Yaste on 29 Oct 1833 at the age of 18 and bore seven children, most of whom remained in Maryland. Amelia died on Valentine’s Day, 1859, just after her 44th birthday and is buried in the Jefferson United Methodist Church Cemetery. Amelia and George had seven children, all of whom were lifelong Maryland residents.

1.3.1.5.1 James Thomas Yaste (31 Oct 1835-30 Jul 1915) was born in Jefferson, Frederick County, Maryland. He served in the Civil War, enlisting on 18 Jul 1862 as a private in Company E, 8th Regiment of the Maryland Infantry, and serving until he was discharged as a corporal on 31 May 1865 when the unit was disbanded. James married Harriet ‘Hattie’ Reese Jones, a widow with one child, on 14 Feb 1875 in Warren, Indiana. Hattie’s daughter, Mary E. Jones was born in 1869. She and James had two sons: George Leonard Yaste (14 Sep 1879-14 Sep 1950) and Elias Reese Yaste (1 Aug 1883-22 Oct 1940).
James served in the Union Army, 8th Regiment, Maryland 8th Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted on 18 Aug 1862 at Frederick, Maryland and mustered out on 31 May 1865 as corporal. The regiment was organized at Baltimore, Maryland, in August 1862, under command of Colonel Andrew W. Denison. It moved to the Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg,
Maryland, on September 18, 1862, and was attached to Kenly’s Maryland Brigade, VIII Corps, Middle Department. It was moved around to various commands and posts within the VIII Corps until July 1863, when it was attached to the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, I Corps, Army of the Potomac. In March 1864, the 8th was transferred to the V Corps. The unit fought throughout the Overland Campaign and the Siege of Petersburg. It participated in the Appomattox Campaign. After marching in the Grand Review of the Armies in Washington, D.C., it was mustered out May 31, 1865.

1.3.1.5.3 Charles Milton Yaste (20 May 1837-8 Mar 1912) married Laura P. Crum (abt. 1842-abt. 1876) on 17 Mar 1864 in Frederick, Md. and they had two children: Harry G. Yaste (Oct. 1866-1941) and Olivia L. ‘Ollie’ Yaste Kaufman (13 Oct 1871-24 Dec 1942 Baltimore, Md). Harry never married. He was apprenticed as a blacksmith by age 13 and continued working as one. He lived in Baltimore City until his death in 1941. Olivia “Ollie” married Edward Kaufman (1868-1943) and they had five children: Edna L. Kaufman (1893-1991), Vernon H. Kaufman (1895-1956), Bland Bird Kaufman Dean (1898-1981), Oliver C. Kaufman (1907-1979), and Leona Kaufman (1910-?).
After Laura died, Charles married Emily Jane Brenneisen (23 Feb 1844-28 Aug 1931 Maryland) in 1876, and they had two more children: Grace A. Yaste (20 Jul 1877-30 Apr 1881) and Maurice Yaste (16 Dec 1880-26 Mar 1883 Frederick County, Md.), both of whom died at an early age.
Charles served in the 1st Maryland Cavalry Potomac Home Brigade during the Civil War. The Home Brigade lost 2 officers, and 45 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 2 officers and 120 enlisted men to disease. He enlisted on 22 Apr 1861. The list of engagements is extensive and includes, Hancock, Md. (January 5–6, 1862), Bloomery Gap (February 14, 1862), the advance on Winchester (March 2–12), Martinsburg, West Virginia (March 3, 1862), Bunker Hill (this was just Co. A), West Virginia (March 5, 1862), action between Bunker Hill and Winchester (March 7, 1862), Stephenson’s Depot (March 7–8), Winchester (March 12, 1862), Kernstown (March 22, 1862), Winchester (March 23, 1862), Edinburg, Va. (April 1), and Charles Town, West Virginia (May 28). In 1864, action against John S. Mosby’s Rangers continued, the battalion engaging them at Rectortown, January 1, 1864. In the dark morning hours and freezing cold temperatures of January 10, 1864, Mosby attempted to make an attack on the camp of Cole’s Battalion at the Battle of Loudoun Heights and was soundly defeated in the effort. Following this action, the battalion was engaged at Romney, Moorefield, and Mechanicsville Gap, Feb 4.

Amanda Ellen Yaste Roderick married William Washington Roderick in 1860. They did not have children and lived primarily in Washington, D.C. after the Civil War. In 1905, at age 69 and three years after Amanda’s death, William was admitted to the US National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Calvin Page Yaste served as Private in 11th Maryland Infantry, Company E from 2 Jun 1864 to 28 Sep 1864 (100 days). He enlisted again on 21 Oct 1864 and mustered out 15 Jun 1865. He died at 19 years of age — not sure if death was related to military service – and was buried at Jefferson United Methodist Cemetery.
